This project was developed as a paper project for coursework and does not represent an existing production.

Set in 1990s New York, the play follows the romantic relationship between two women during a time when LGBTQ+ communities faced widespread discrimination and the lasting impact of the AIDS crisis. I wanted to explore the conflict between nature and artifact—between authentic human emotion and the social systems that attempt to control it.

The Concept

The design draws inspiration from Austrian architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser, who believed that straight lines are disconnected from nature. His philosophy became the foundation of the visual language.

The built environments—the West Village apartment, hospital room, and police station—are composed of rigid, geometric forms that represent institutional control, social expectations, and prejudice. In contrast, the park remains visible throughout the play, serving as a symbol of freedom, honesty, and a place where the characters can exist as their true selves.

The Space

The audience watches the story move between private and public spaces while the park remains constantly in view. This visual contrast emphasizes the growing tension between confinement and freedom, allowing the emotional journey to unfold through the changing environments.

The Execution

The project was developed as a paper project for coursework and includes a scale model, 3D renderings, and marketing materials exploring the relationship between architecture, nature, and performance.

This project challenged me to translate historical context into spatial storytelling. By contrasting organic and geometric forms, I developed a visual language that communicates emotional conflict while supporting the actors' movement and the audience's understanding of the narrative.
